Welcome to the Island La Palma
La Palma is a unique island, with its own character, internationally known as "La I sla Bonita" (= the beautiful island) for its natural beauties, for which it has been declared as World Reserve of the Biosphere with the brightest and clearest skies of the entire north ern hemisphere .
The climate and tranquility make all our visitors forget the daily grind.
La Palma is not a typical holiday resort, like the ones you're used to. It is a destination which does not know the meaning of mass tourism. We are far away from the bustle of the other Canary islands . It is a perfect place for nature lovers.
La Caldera the Taburiente, a massive volcanic crater, was declared a National Park in 1954, and enlarged in 1981 . In 1983 the forest Los Tiles was declared a Reserve of the Biosphere by Unesco .
In November of 2000, the whole island was declared a Reserve of the Biosphere.
The island's chief treasure is nature. We have the Caldera National Park, and four other National Parks and reserves, two protected areas, eight national monuments, and three places of special scientific interest. All of this in one small island! But as you will discover, the island's geography makes it look much bigger than it is.
It takes several days to explore the Caldera de Taburiente. There is a Visitors Centre in El Paso which will provide information about the park and give camping permits.
There are several roads leading to impressive viewpoints around and inside the Caldera de Taburiente, for example "La Cumbrecita, which can be reached by car. Inside the Caldera, there is a network of signposted footpaths. There is also somebody who can give some information about the environment.
You will find t he best panoramic views at the Roque de los Muchachos, which is home to the most important Astrophysics Observatory in the Northern hemisphere.
In the south we find the volcanoes San Antonio and Teneguia, which last erupted in 1971. The landscape is impressive, and in places looks like Mars. Down at sea-level there is a lighthouse, and beside it, a salt works.
If you decide to come to La Palma , do not expect to find kilometres of golden sand beaches with lots of people, snack bars, and fast-food restaurants.
When you decide to go to La Palma , you chose tranquillity , nature, clean volcanic sand beaches, café s where you can taste traditional "tapas" (=snacks) delicious local food (like mojo, fish, potatoes, bienmesabe =des s ert with honey, etc .), little markets, kind people, little discothèques, and a lot of relaxation .
When you visit our island, make sure you get out and about. It's a dreadful waste to stay in your hotel because you only see a small part of the island. Belive us - you want to see it all .
The best way of getting to know the island is to rent a car . It let s you enjoy the beauty of the island in your own way .
If you do not want to drive, you can also take an excursion by bus . La Palma has good, professional guides who can explain you everything you wish to know about this island, in Spanish and in other languages.
Either will show you the delights of this island. Take time to listen to the sounds, smell the flowers and admire the beautiful views of nature of this island.
Enjoy you stay!
